OK, so it was all fun and games at Thanksgiving and now your jeans don’t fit, right? Does this sound familiar? It happens to me too. This year I went in with a game plan. I wasn’t even cooking at my house this year, so I wasn’t going to have three days worth of leftovers there to tempt me. I had a fridge full of fruits and veggies ready to go.
So what happened? Excuses happened. Lazy days off of work happened. Trips to the grocery store for unhealthy goodies happened, and things got piled on top of those fruits and veggies which sat there sadly and wilted until Saturday afternoon when I through them out. Then the mailman opened the fridge on Sunday morning and said he could hear an echo. There were tumbleweeds blowing around in my fridge. It was a ghost town.
Sunday, I stepped on the scale and thought either it was broken or I’d accidentally swallowed an anvil. How do you gain seven pounds in a week? Leave it to me to test the laws of physics.
Besides eating way too much, I’d also been eating way too much of the wrong types of foods. Processed foods, sugar, just all around junk, and it really got me thinking. This was not what I had taught myself to do over the last year and a half. My food behaviors had become so much better than this, I was really letting myself down here. I needed to get back into the habits I had formed for myself. I felt terrible, I wasn’t sleeping right, I wasn’t getting enough activity, and my moods were all funky. In technical terms, I felt like a Bag-o-Crap.
It was time for me to detox. And not a fancy, as seen on TV detox, with hundreds of dollars worth of crazy chemicals. I have no interest in those kind of shenanigans. Just a simple, cut out all the crap, detox.
This isn’t just an arbitrary “diet” where I’ve chosen random foods and you’ll drop weight because you’re eating less calories than you are used to eating. I’ve seen diets like that on Pinterest and they infuriate me when they have thousands of re-pins. They are only effective because they lack calories or carbs. They aren’t healthy or sustainable. The military diet angers me the most. Hot dogs and saltine crackers! Really? And the cabbage soup diet is another. And there’s one floating around that you start out with only bananas. Then you switch to something else, then maybe back to only bananas. That seems legit. For monkeys.
This is not like that.
This is an extremely healthy way of eating. You could eat like this for the rest of your life if you wanted to. It’s also not a low carb diet since you’ll get carbs from the vegetables and the fruit. You just won’t be eating refined carbs.
Tons of water, a high protein breakfast, lean and green for lunch and dinner. By lean and green, I mean lean protein and lots of green, or non-starchy vegetables. I really want to focus on the vegetables and the protein. A few servings of healthy fruit, like berries, apples, or oranges. Healthy fats like nuts and avocado. The only dairy would be a high protein Greek yogurt with no added sugar.
Here is the plan laid out into a few simple steps:
In fact, if you want, you can drink a Detox tea. This one is all natural and herbal. No chemicals. It will help flush all the junk out of your system. (Amazon affiliate links, see disclosure.)
Workout Options, Choose One daily (The only equipment you’ll need are some dumbbells and a yoga mat.)
30-40 minute walk, with optional jogging/running intervals
Lower Body Workout-try to get through this one three times. If you can’t on the first try, that’s OK!
Ab and Core Workout-twice through for this one. Again, we are all at different skill levels. Look on YouTube if there are moves you don’t recognize.
Total Body Workout-Twice through on this one. You will feel amazing!
If you are finding that you are still hungry you should eat larger servings of protein. I’m not sure why we think our protein servings need to be so minuscule. Protein is filling, and we need protein. Eat another ounce or two of lean chicken breast or grilled fish or tuna at lunch or dinner if that helps you stay full longer. It’s better than snacking on something from the vending machine or candy bowl.
Also, fat is important for satiety, so you really cannot skip this part of the plan. Fat doesn’t make us fat. Add some nuts, some avocado, some extra virgin olive oil, or coconut oil to each meal. A measured amount of course.
For snacks, choose a clean snack like a piece of fruit and some raw, unsalted nuts. I buy the 100 calorie packs so that they are already portioned for me. There are also pre-portioned packets of nut butter available that are great for travel.
Another option is whey protein powder, mixed with either almond milk, coconut milk, or water and blended with ice, baby spinach or kale, and some frozen berries. It’s a delicious, in between meal, or post workout protein source. If you are on the go, just pack a scoop of protein powder into a blender bottle and bring a bottle of water to mix in when you’re ready.
And the water. Don’t forget the water! You can’t flush your system without it! Buy a cute new water bottle to carry around with you to keep you motivated. This one is super motivating, right? This guy holds 32 ounces, so three of these is about what I need for the day. I add lemon sometimes, or I’ll drink some sparkling water like LaCroix or Perrier, just to keep things interesting. As long as there are no artificial sweeteners added, these are fine to drink. I also love green tea. Hot green tea, iced green tea. It’s all delicious. Give it a try, it has some real health benefits. The mailman got me Matcha green tea for the Keurig. Love it!
Below I’ve laid out five days worth of meal plan options for you. These are just options. Change things up if you want to, sticking with the model above.
Make sure when you make these salads you are using tons of fresh veggies. just because you are only using a teaspoon of olive oil doesn’t mean you can’t make a big salad! Add lemon juice, fresh pepper, vinegar of your choice. Whatever you like. Just get those non-starchy veggies in!
Have two snacks per day if you need to. You don’t need to be hungry to lose weight.
So give this detox a try. You have nothing to lose but those extra holiday pounds. Remember, act like the person you want to become. So let’s all act healthy, fit and as though we have already achieved our goal weight! Give yourself that gift!
Let me know what you think and how this works for you!
